By day I create engaging and interactive UI elements for the most digitally thinking Local Authority in the UK. By night I craft designs and websites for brands around the world. Chorleywood is where I chop wood and set up camp with my senior sausage dog, Rory. I have over 15 years worth of experience working across an ever-widening range of industries.
My designs are carefully crafted to work. From local government, to sports teams to restaurants and pet shops, I love working with a range of clients. I love what I do and it humbles me to see the how my craft can really drive value for my partners and clients.
New branding for a team and an organisation just bursting with pride!
When I was emailed late one night with a new logo request for an ice hockey team of course I jumped out of bed and grabbed my sketchbook. I love creating and being somewhat of a night owl, most of my better ideas come when admittedly I should be sleeping!
The logo request came from the Coachella Valley Pride Hockey organisation based in Palm Springs, CA. Their mission is “to introduce hockey to the LGBTQ+ community and enjoy the great game of hockey in a safe and inclusive space.” This mission needed to be echoed in their new logo.
The Eagle (Strength)
The geometric eagle represented a few things. An eagle spreading its wings can be a display of strength and dominance. The design of the wings symbolises the mountain peaks you see across every horizon around the Valley.
Art Deco (Pride)
I incorporated six bold shapes across the top of the circle each with its own colour. These shapes were colourised with the pride colours and represented abstract rays of sunlight creeping over the horizon behind the eagle.
Typography (Context)
Your eye is drawn to the break in the circle which adds context, a pair of hockey sticks and a single puck. The cross over hockey sticks were designed to create a symmetry with the triangular shapes of the eagle’s wings above.
Flexibility (Robustness)
I knew that the Eagles primarily needed a logo that was easy to be embroidered on their team gear so that’s why I opted for bold, larger shaped elements that weren’t too intricate to replicate.
The latest website to launch!
The latest website to go live is UK based Print and IT company Quantum Managed Services Group (QMSG). With offices in London, Kent and East Sussex they provide IT and Print solutions to help empower their clients so they can focus on growth and not IT issues.
How the website was built
QMSG's website brief was short, "we want a new website". But, sometimes that's all it takes to get the cogs in my head going! Their original website felt a bit cold due to too much black space and stock imagery.
Here are a few key steps I took to develop the new website and give it the personality and digital presence it deserved:
Starting with a clear brand identity
QMSG's brand colour is an electro-lime green (#0FD16A). Their use of the colour on their previous website created too much of a harsh clash next to white and black.
So I implemented some off whites by adding grey, green and blue tones. I introduced a new dark green colour (#0A2933) to use as my dark base colour. Using this colour instead of black softened the harshness of the colour clash.
Serving up a set of consistent icons
I'm a big believer that icons can make or break a website. They help add personality but they have to be used right and they have to be consistent. Icon sets are in themselves their own language so mixing their style is like writing in multiple languages.
QMSG offer four core services, so I created four isometric icons to give these areas a clear identity in keeping with the tech theme. Within these areas I designed icons that complimented each other.
Lastly, lets add some moving parts!
Like an icon set, videos when used right can help tell a story and set a tone. I decided to use some subtle looped videos across the website.
Other than providing a bit of dynamism, it helped to get across the visualisation of specific processes and services that QMSG offer. I implemented videos in the hero elements across the website to give a consistent greeting when the user first lands on any given page of the website.

When you put all the pieces together I feel that I created a website that is consistent in branding, look and feel and usability. Once you visit one page you immediately know how to navigate the website.
Good consistency in design helps to put the content centre stage. Other than merely looking good, you need to sell your services and ultimately that buy-in comes from the web content.
I'm pleased with how it turned out. From the glass UI elements to the soft green tones, the icon set and the font type, I think the glow up for QMSG has been one of real value and I hope it elevates their business to another level.
Recent website project for Playskill
I completed a complete redesign of a website for Playskill. They are a charity based in Hertfordshire focusing on care for children with special needs. A charity that do so much good for the community, I wanted to go the extra mile.
